EPCS WORKFLOW (SENDING A CONTROLLED MEDICATION)

Applicable for providers who successfully registered and enabled with EPCS permissions.

STEPS

Step 1: From the medication page, make sure to select the medication from the database (search and select from the dropdown). Refrain from choosing medications with an unknown dosage or form, as they may not contain an NDC code, which is essential for electronic prescriptions.

Select Prescription Dropdown

Step 2: Complete the prescription details, choose the pharmacy and hit Add as Prescription.

Add Prescription

Step 3: Created prescriptions are added to the Current Note Prescriptions. The C icon signifies that the added medication is a controlled substance with the Schedule Level. We added a “Schedule Level” signifier to let the prescribing provider know what level the medication is for potential abuse. This is ranked from I-V, “I” being the highest potential for abuse and “V” the lowest.

Step 4:

  1. For a single controlled prescription, you can click the envelope Send icon to send it electronically.

    Send Prescription

  2. For multiple controlled prescriptions, check the box on the left side of Prescription or check the box individually to select prescriptions.

Note: You cannot send controlled prescriptions with non-controlled prescriptions at the same time.

Step 5: Click Send Controlled Prescriptions.

Step 6: A pop-up box will show your Prescription Details preview. This will also show the Vital Signs information if available. Click Approve & Sign.
